Create Content Consistently

The key to growing your blog and business boils down to creating consistent content that adds value to your audience.

Consistency is Key.

Every time we share content whether on our blog or on social media, we’re not only adding value to our audience and solving a problem they care about; we’re also building credibility (you know, proving we actually KNOW what we’re talking about), establishing our brand, and cultivating a community with our audience.

But like any relationship,  if we only show up sparingly when we’re inspired to, when we’re in need of  something (sharing a sponsored post, or want to make a sale)  or better yet simply when we’re in the“mood”, our audience will slowly (but surely) begin to lose their trust in our brand.

Why Consistent Content Matters.

Whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve been blogging for years, the number one thing that will help you build a successful blog isn’t pretty brand colors or a dope website. But, consistently creating quality content for your blog. Here’s why.

  1. It helps for better SEO ranking and growing traffic to your blog.
  2. Consistent content builds trust in your brand because your audience knows what to expect from you, and when.
  3. You ultimately become an authority and expert  in your niche.
  4. Your community and audience grows because readers love new content.

Needless to say, consistency is really what separates the wheat from the chaff, and like most things, consistency is a learned behavior. Yes it’s hard, but lucky for you, it’s also POSSIBLE.

How To Create Consistently For Your Blog:

Here’s are 12 strategies to help you start  building consistency with your blog that you can start implementing today.

1. FIND YOUR FOCUS

Purpose fuels productivity. It’s impossible to reach a goal if you haven’t established a  reason for “why” you need to reach said goal in the first place.  So one of the biggest reasons why we struggle with creating content is not because we’re lazy or need some extra motivation, but because we  simply lack direction.

And if lack of clarity keeps us from creating one piece of quality content, it definitely won’t help us do it repeatedly or in this case, consistently. But when you’re clear on what our focus is, creating quality content becomes a breeze. This is why it’s important to always be clear on what your niche is.

2. BUILD A BANK FOR CONSISTENT CONTENT

Content creation happens in three phases. First the ideas, then the drafting of said idea, then finally the output.

The problem is, often times we skip the first two phases and shoot straight to output. And it probably works a few times. But the “build content as you go model” is often not sustainable.

Because we’re human we’ll have days when we’re completely uninspired, or preoccupied with life and other things. So when some juicy SEO worthy idea to share with our audience doesn’t miraculously fall on us, we blame it on ‘writer block.’

This is why you need a content bank.

Having an file of ideas and topics for your blog, videos, and social media  helps  you create content consistently because you’ll always have an archive to refer back to whenever you run fresh out of ideas, or simply need something valuable to share with your audience.

3. AUTOMATE YOUR CONTENT SCHEDULE

When you schedule your content ahead of time whether it’s just a few days or several months,  you don’t have to worry about falling behind (or apart). This also helps you focus on other day to day tasks by delegating the majority of your workload ahead of time.

When things get scheduled, they get done. This is always the case when it comes to content and a sure fire way to make sure you are consistently posting, sharing, and creating quality content on a consistent basis. Some of the things you can easily schedule and automate for your blog are

  1. Blog posts
  2. Pins on Pinterest
  3. Facebook posts
  4. Instagram Posts
  5. Tweets
  6. Newsletters

4. WORK IN BATCHES

Batch working is my secret sauce to knocking out a full 7 day work week, in just 24 hours. That is, rolling up my sleeves and carving out a specific time to do a collective batch of work at the same time.

Batching gives you the  flexibility to take breaks in between work, cuts out procrastination, and also reduces the chances of burn out because you don’t feel overwhelmed with a heavy workload.

For instance, whether I’m working with brands or simply creating personal content, I will schedule a specific day of the month for all things photography. From creative direction, to post production , and then save as many images as I can.

This way I have a ton of visual content on reserve for social and blog sharing, and I can use the rest of the month focusing on other things!

You can use this method (batching) for writing, editing, e-mails, research, and pretty much everything else. Just think of it as “meal prepping” for your blog and business.

5. SET GOALS AND DEADLINES

Sometimes vaguely setting goals become pretty ambiguous because it’s simply just out there and only becomes a priority when we “feel like it.” And we both  know mood and consistency do not at all go in the same sentence.

On the other hand, deadlines give you a sense of urgency and “i’ll get around to it” no longer becomes an option.

So when it comes to creating consistent content it’s not enough to have the goal to create consistently, you must also set deadlines on finishing something which cuts out the procrastination and pushes you to sharing content. Yes, even when it’s not perfect.

6. FIND ACCOUNTABILITY

Having someone push you and hold you accountable keeps your sharp, focused, and more liable to “follow through” because you know, there are creepy eyes watching you at a distance.

Because believe me, nothing’s better (or more mortifying) than a text from a friend, or an email from a business coach saying“ so about that book you mentioned to me three months ago, how’s that coming along”?

7. CREATE BOUNDARIES AND RESTRICTIONS

Whether that’s taking a break from social media to set your editorial calendar and catch up on work, or passing up on the weeklong getaway with friends to invest in outsourcing material for your blog.

It’s important to set restrictions that keep you focused on the task you started out to do, regardless of how lust worthy that trip to Jamaica looks on the gram.

Boundaries enforce discipline. And when it comes to staying on your A game for your blog, you need discipline to finish the the work you set out to do, even when the mood you said it in has left you. So in order to remain consistent, we need to build clear boundaries and restrictions around our blog that keeps us in line with our goals.

8. OUTSOURCE CERTAIN TASKS

Okay, this may sound REALLY crazy, but here’s the thing. Hustling makes you tired, not rich. Just because you can “do it all,” doesn’t mean  you have to (or should).

It’s impossible to stay on top of your game, ALL of the time when you’re the writer, copy editor, photographer, editor, ads manager, researcher, videographer, social media guru, Pinterest manager, graphic and web designer all at the same time.

It takes a village, and if you really want to get the most out of your work days, then delegate trivial and or the most time consuming tasks.

And before you go..’But I can’t afford an assistant right now” on me,  you don’t have to.

There are so many ways to outsource content that will cost you little to no money. For example,

  • Hiring an intern in exchange for free training and work experience in your field.

  • Hiring someone on Fiverr, you can literally get a custom logo for like $5!

And you could also barter services with your peers by exchanging help in EQUAL value so you don’t have to spend twelve hours trying to figure out what someone else can do in twenty minutes.

9. SCHEDULE BREAKS BETWEEN WORK

Yes. I know “rest” is overrated because no days off right? Well, not quite. I mean sure hard work pays off, but not when it’s at the expense of wait lets see, your health?

The quickest way to experience burnout is ignoring what your body needs for what your mind think it wants (in the moment).

And It may not always seem like it, but the road to becoming a successful content creator is a journey, not a sprint. And if you’re  in it for the long haul and plan on being consistent in giving your audience the best (not burnt out) version of you , give yourself a break every now and again.

10. ESTABLISH A CLEAR WORKFLOW FOR CONSISTENCY

Establishing a workflow is a crucial way to not only keep you organized, but a great method to help you create content consistently. So what exactly is a workflow? Let’s just call it ‘the order of business’ to ensure things get done.  It’s in essence a layout of the precise steps you take  on a project or a task (in this case your content), from start to finish.

For example. A work flow for publishing a blog post can look something like this:

Idea—>  Research—> Draft—> Edit draft—> Ready To Publish—> Create graphic—> Schedule—>  Publish

11. CREATE A CONTENT CALENDAR

Seeing a visual layout of my month with tasks assigned to each day/ week keeps me accountable. This way before i “put it off to tomorrow,” I can see that tomorrow has it’s work cut out for it, so I make sure It gets done that day.

This is why it’s important to keep an editorial calendar for your content so you never miss a days worth of work and it eliminates the urge to procrastinate.

12. FOCUS ON QUALITY VS. QUANTITY

Gone are the days where blogs are pumping out filler content three times a day every day of the week. These days your audience is looking for bookmark worthy content that they can read, take notes with, and actually apply to their lives. It’s no news that quality trumps quantity, and when it comes to blogging, it remains the same.

So If you want to stay consistent, focus less on pushing out random  x amount of content a week that only leads to burn out, and focus rather on how you can create quality  consistent content on a schedule that best works for you.
